The Youth Action Team is our after school training program which develops the leadership of youth through the arts, political education, community organizing, healing and transformation. Youth Organizers in the team are trained to facilitate interactive workshops, organize community events or actions, and use arts based techniques to engage community members in conversations about the ways that racism and violence is impacting Oakland youth. They receive a socio-political education that centers racial justice and the violence that is perpetrated by the systems that impact them in order to create change locally and across the state. Youth Organizers have the opportunities throughout the school year participate in our annual retreats, international days of action, national leadership conferences, BAY-Peace fundraising house parties, performances or showcases and collaborations with other Oakland youth organizers.
This 2017-2018 school year, the Youth Action Team will be focusing on building Forum Theater skits in collaboration with representatives from the Full Picture Coalition. These Forum Theater pieces will play a central role in our Drop The MIC workshops which they will be leading starting in the Winter. You can learn more about Drop The MIC here.
